The history of the Snow Leopard and were they come from.
Snow leopards have been around since 1775
These beautiful animals are endangered due to habitat loss and hunting. Snow leopards are more closely related to tigers than leopards. Snow leopards are also occasionally called Ounces.
Snow leopards live in cold climates in and around the mountains of central Asia, in countries such as Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India, Nepal and Bhutan.
Snow leopards’ tails are longer, in proportion to body size, compared to other cats. It I said that this provides them with better balance for walking in rocky environments.
On average snow leopard can live up to 20 years.
Snow leopards have light green or grey eyes, unlike other big cats, whose eyes are yellow / orange.
Snow leopards are found in the mountains of Central Asia. Their found in the Himalayan mountains of Tibet, Nepal, India, and Bhutan; Pakistan’s Karakorum and Hindu Kush; the high mountain ranges of Afghanistan, Mongolia, the People’s Republic of China, Russia and the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The can even be found at the base of earth’s highest mountain, Mt. Everest.
Within the mountains, snow leopards like high, steep and rocky places where there are few plants.
The red patches on the map above is were the snow leopards are found. The travel from these places .
Are people hunting them?
Yes people are hunting Snow Leopards. People hunt Snow Leopards because their bones, skin and organs are valuable in traditional Asian medicine. A poacher can get $300 for a dead snow leopard but hey can be sold for $10,000.
Another reason for people hunting snow leopards is because humans are pushing further and further into their habitat with their livestock. The livestock then eat the snow Leopards food which leads to overgrazing and there is now food left for the Snow Leopards. The Snow Leopards get hungrier so the prey on the livestock. The humans are not happy when the come back and see that there animals are dead so the go and kill the snow Leopards.
Statistics & Extinction
- There is only 4500- 7500 Snow Leopards left in the wild.
- There is about 600- 700 in zoos around the world.
- An adult male is about 45 –55kg.
- Female snow leopards are about 30% smaller than males.
- 6-7.5 feet (1.8-2.3m) (includes 40-inch (1m) tail length).
- Snow Leopards are not seriously in extinction as over the years the have learned not to come out of nature as this way it is harder for humans to find them. Also snow Leopards are threatened more than being extinct.
Mistreated- In Moscow zoo in Russia if a Snow leopard does not follow the keepers rules they are hit. But nothing can be done about this because Russia has no rules on animal abuse.
I personal think this should not be allowed as Snow Leopards are not meant to be kept to be kept in cages and I think that it is awful that if they don’t do what they are told the are hit. You are not allowed to hit children if they don’t do what they are told (child abuse) so why should humans be allowed to hit Snow Leopards( animal abuse).
Research says that people who work with Snow Leopards have more knowledge know a now days than ever before of Snow Leopards and how the live, so snow Leopards have a high standard of living in most zoos around the world in 2016. If they are treated fairly and are giving a high standard of living a they are enjoying life I think then the can stay in zoos but only if they are happy and they have a high standard of living.
Why I Choose this Animal?
I choose Snow Leopards because I didn’t realize. They are endanger and threatened. I also though the look really pretty and cute animals and Finally I choose Snow leopards because I like cats and Snow Leopards are more related to tigers than Leopards.
Improve Snow Leopards situation
In my opinion I think there should be a law put in place around the world, which stops people from killing snow leopards for their fur and from their bone. I also think farmers should not be allowed to go near snow leopards habitat and if they do its their own fault for their livestock dyeing and not the snow leopards fault so the farmers should not kill them.
